What is CLEP?
CLEP is short for College-Level Exam Preparation. It’s a program that allows you to take a test and earn college credit. This can shave time off your college career as well as the extra expenses such as tuition, lab fees, textbooks, and parking passes to name just a few. They can be taken at your own pace so a very flexible option for those in the Military. Just imagine the possibilities of what you can learn and accomplish during your active duty service.
Military personnel have free access to CLEP study guides through their base. These come in physical versions and digital eBook versions depending on your learning style/preference. Check in with your Education Services Officer to get the most current information specific to your base.
These free CLEP study guides are written by a collection of college professors and graduates from the very classes you want to test out of. They come with everything you need without having to worry about purchasing a textbook. All you need is our study guide, the included flashcards, and an internet connection. Once you feel confident in the materials you have studied, you may even be able to take your test at a CLEP testing center available on your active duty base (depending on each base). Other testing center options may include the college you are attending, any open testing center, or any DANTE education center. Typically CLEP tests have fees associated with them but they are free for Military personnel and some civilian employees. It is important to note that some testing centers may still have an administration fee for using their facilities to take your test.
Different types of CLEP tests/study guides available ranging from American History to Psychology. It is advisable to speak with your academic advisor or school counselor to make sure that the classes you want to test out of are in the credit areas you need. Also that the college will accept credits from CLEP tests. There are some schools that have limits set on how many credits you are able to test out of so it is important to do your homework before you plan out what CLEP tests you take.
